For Immediate Release

The North Central West Virginia Tea Party is pleased to announce that at its Second Annual Independence Day Tea Party on Monday, July 5, 2010 at noon at the Veterans’ Park Amphitheater in Clarksburg, West Virginia, a dedicated member of our organization, Frank Tumas, will announce his candidacy for United States Senate as an Independent.  We will be supporting Frank in obtaining the necessary signatures to gain ballot access and for a campaign to make him the next United States Senator from the Great State of West Virginia.

Frank is a retiree who lives in Richie County and is a dedicated member of our organization. He has been married for over 40years to his wife Terri and is especially proud of his five grandchildren. Before he retired, he received his bachelor's in electrical engineering from Fairleigh Dickenson University. He worked in industrial management for twenty-five years. He also spent ten years doing electrical contracting and a few years teaching math and science. He is a friend of coal and would vote against cap and tax or any other scheme that would hurt West Virginia's economy. He would vote to repeal Obamacare. He is for a balanced federal budget and for reducing the size of the federal government to only what the Constitution mandates. He is a firm believer in the entire Bill of Rights, including the First, Second, and Tenth Amendments.

Among other confirmed speakers for the rally are Congressional Candidate David McKinley, State Senator Clark Barnes, Fair Tax State Chairman Brock Oliverio, Former Congressional Candidate Conrad Lucas, and Campaign for Liberty State Chairman Ed Burgess.

Defend the Republic-Dr. Richard Kerr at the 2010 Tax Day Tea Party

Dr. Richard Kerr is a retired physician and the former chair of the state Libertarian Party. At the 2010 Tax Day Tea Party, he inspired us all to defend our republic. He knows the value of the Constitution and knows value of freedom.

Progressives believe the principals of the Founding Fathers are irrelevant today. However, Dr. Kerr pointed out, “The same defects in human nature that inspired the Founding Fathers to protect us from government excesses. The lust for power still motivates some. Power still tends to corrupt and absolute power still tends to corrupt absolutely. Men still covet each other’s processions. Leisure is still more fun than work, and majority will still, when able, plunder the assets from minorities.” Dr. Kerr said that now, as our population grows, we need Local and State governments to deal with local and state issues.

He, also, pointed out that when you spend a dollar on one person you have to take that dollar from someone else. Where is the moral value in that and how do we expect our nation to survive when we take from the producers and give to the “loafers”? As Dr. Kerr said, “When you punish people through taxation for producing, and you pay people through entitlement programs for loafing, you will get more loafing and less production.”

Now is the time for us to save our republic. Dr. Kerr issued this challenge to us, “Speak boldly. Call thievery thievery. Call fascism fascism. Hound your congressman and senators until they are sick of hearing from you or until they do the right thing.” He said, “It is un-American for the government to exceed its Constitutional bounds.”He listed acts of our government that were un-American, including the bailouts. Most importantly he said, “It was despicable, it was unconscionable, and it’s absolutely un-American have accumulated such a mind boggling national debt and unfunded liabilities. This debt will doom our children and grandchildren to a crippling level of taxation and make them indenture servants to the government.” We need to vote out every “thieving incumbent” that got us into this mess!

Freedom or Slavery-Russell Gatian Winner the Next Great Grassroots Politician Competition

At the 2010 Tax Day Tea Party, we had a Next Great Grassroots Politician Competition. We know that among our ranks there are many people who would run our government better than the politicians in DC and Charleston. We, also, know there are people who can deliver speeches that inspire and educate. We want to find these people and get them engaged. Though this competition we found an inspiring man named Russell Gatian.

Gatian started his speech with a quote from Patrick Henry.

“The question before the House is one of awful moment to this country.  For my own part I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery…Mr. President, it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope.”

Then Gatian pointed out that the health care vote was “a question of freedom or slavery.” This piece of legislation will lead to universal, government run health care. Not only that, but we stood up and said that we do not want this legislation passed, and the politicians in DC voted for it anyway. Gatian pointed out that countries with universal health care have tax rate from 40-65% of their income. When we work hard to earn money and the politicians in DC take that money away from us to spend as they please that is slavery.

Gaitain mentioned that the Founding Fathers said "taxation without representation is tyranny.” Gatian said, “Another form of tyranny occurs when our Representatives do not represent us.” He ended his speech with a warning to those in power, but it could also be a call for us to get involved in the elections in November. He said, “Give us back our liberty or we’ll take back our House.”

Government Contro of Schools-Paul Howe at the 2010 Tax Day Tea Party

Paul Howe is the president of the Harrison County School Board. At the Tax Day Tea Party, he spoke about what happens when there is too much government control of the school system. When he ran for school board he had hopes to “make a difference in curriculum, way we teach, and help our children.” He soon discovered many of his ideas were turned down because they were not allowed to implement such ideas. He said, “The government is not necessarily the best organization to determine the education for our children.”

Howe spoke about with standardized tests in the school system. “Standardized tests mean the schools must focus the curriculum on what the government wants to the detriment of other areas that maybe important.”

The following are problems with standardized test that he has discovered by talking to people in the education field:

Teaching to the test is an increasing problem, because teachers are afraid of losing their jobs.

Teachers cannot create curriculum that is creative and personally relevant to their students.

Because of the extreme focus on reading and math, subject such as art, Physical Education, social studies and science are neglected.

It lessens the flexibility of teacher.

The bottom line is every student different. Standardized testing does not account for these differences. Standardizing our education does leave children behind. It leaves behind the children that do not fit into the government’s mold of a perfect child. As Howe said, “Each student and situation is different. We should leave the teacher with as much leeway as possible in designing curriculum.”

The problem is not just federal mandates; it is also state mandates. West Virginia is a state run school system. To give an idea of the way the state runs the schools Howe mentioned that there are 937 pages of personnel law that needs to be in hiring and firing people. Howe spoke of talking to people at church and the grocery store, who have serious concerns, and he gets tired of giving the same answer “that’s a state law or legislative rule and we have no control over it.” The most important aras of our lives should be left to the people close to us. When we elect people we trust from our local community to oversee our school system, we should be able to stop them in the grocery store and ask what can do our concerns. The state legislators do not know our children like the people from our communities, the teacher in our, and certainly not like we do as parents. There needs to be more local control of our schools.
