But I Don't Want to Vote! Why Should I?

Are you tired of political commercials? Do wish those political  signs would just go away? Of course, you may throw something, if you get one  more political call. Please, do not let bitterness from the political cycle keep  you from the polls on Tuesday. Our country needs people to protect freedom for  future generations, support good people, and stand up for their values at the ballot box on Election Day.

 We  have been blessed with freedom in this nation. We protect our freedom through  votes. Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our  children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for  them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our  hildren and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” We could be the generation that loses the freedom our  Founding Fathers sacrificed so greatly to ensure for our nation. One of purposes  of our Constitution is to “secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our  posterity.”Posterity is simply the future generations. As part of upholding the  Constitution, we are securing “the blessings of liberty” for our children and  their children. When my grandchildren climb onto my lap and ask what I did so  they could live in a free nation, I want to have an answer. I will not say, “Nothing. I’m just not interested in politics.” I will not say, “Nothing. I  really could not make a difference anyway.” I will say, “I made my voice heard  by voting for the candidates I thought would do the best  job.”
 
Many  people claim they do not vote because there are no good candidates. If that is  you, please consider that there may be no good candidates because the good  people do not vote; therefore a candidate cannot win by being “good”. Also,  consider that there may be good candidates, but a 30 second television  commercial only reflects a snippet of a person’s life. People are naturally  drawn toward the negative, so the media reflects the negative. As much as  people claim to dislike negative advertising, it works, so candidates tend to  point out the flaws of their opponents instead of their own strengths. The  truth is everyone makes mistakes and no one will agree with any one of us 100%  of the time. Find out which candidates will vote to best support your values,  and don’t write them off just because their opponent says they are evil. If you  are a good person, do your best to vote for good people.  According  to Thomas Jefferson, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good  conscience to remain silent.” Are you a person of good conscience? Will you remain silent and let  tyranny gain a foothold or will you make your voice heard through your  vote? 

It is true that you may not know which candidates will promote  your values. Not everyone can go to town halls and meet the candidate events.  Does that mean you cannot make an informed decision? Try finding organizations  that support your values. Here at the North Central West Virginia Tea Party, we  support fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and  accountability of elected officials. We try to encourage support of candidates  who do the same. Political parties have headquarters where people can get  information on where candidates stand on the issues. Although I do not encourage  people to vote merely based on political party, people can always look at the  party platforms and vote for candidates in the party that best represents their  values. In this information age, please, do not let lack of information be your  reason for not voting.
 
This is your opportunity to stand for future generations, to  stand as good people, and to stand representing our values. Will you take this  opportunity or will you leave it in the hands of someone else? You have a voice!  You have an opinion! You have a vote! Please, use your vote to express your  opinion and make your voice heard!

Tuesday: Primary Election and Monthly Meeting‏

Greeting Patriots,

This Tuesday is a very important day, Primary Election Day! Polls are open Tuesday from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.Every election is an opportunity to make our voices heard and participation in the elections keeps our elected officials accountable to the people. Many of you have already taken advantage of this opportunity by participating in early voting. For those that have not, here are a few things to consider.

 

Tea Party Candidates

Through a vetting process in which candidates were interviewed and those in attendance at our February meeting voted on who to support, our Tea Party group decided to support two candidates during this primary. The candidates supported by our group are as follows:

Diana Bartley (Republican) for the House of Delegates District 48

Joe Galan (Democrat) for Assessor in Harrison County

There are many other conservative candidates on the ballot. Please try to find information on other candidates and make an informed decision about each position.

 

Independent Voters

If you are an independent (No Party Choice) you may vote in either the Republican or Democratic Primary. Remember to request the ballot from the party in which you would like to vote. The poll workers are not supposed to ask which ballot you would like.

 

Delegates to the National Convention

The people who actually determine the presidential nominee of each party are the delegates to the National Conventions. The WV Republican Party lets the people decide who will represent our state at their national convention by listing those seeking this opportunity on the ballot. This vote may not get much press, however, it is an extremely important race. For those who are voting in the Republican primary, please thoughtfully consider your votes for delegates to the national convention.

My husband and fellow co-founder of the North Central WV Tea Party, Ryan Kennedy, wrote a blog to further explain the position of Delegate to the National Convention. The North Central WV Tea Party is not supporting any particular candidates for Delegate to the National Convention, however this blog does contain a list of local Tea Partiers and names submitted by Tea Party organizers from around the state.

Monthly Meeting

We will have our regular monthly meeting this Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the YWCA directly following a class on the Constitution presented by the Constitution Academy. The class begins at 6:00 pm. After the meeting some of us will be walking over to the courthouse to check out the progress of the election returns.

This is an important year for us to make our voice heard and the primary is one step of the process. I want to thank you for your participation. Together we can take our nation back.

So How Does This Election of Republican National Convention Delegates Work?

Early voting has begun in West Virginia and Election Day is May 8th.  As many of you already know, the votes that actually help to determine who the presidential nominee of each party is are the votes cast by each state’s delegates to that party’s national conventions.  Also, these
delegates write the official national party platform which will define what each party stands for over the next four years.  Each party in each state decides how they want to select these delegates. 


The Democratic Party in West Virginia decided to have a series of county conventions which select delegates to a state convention and then that state convention will select delegates to the Democratic National Convention.  This process is already underway.


The Republican Party in West Virginia decided, however, to put
all the people who want to be delegates to its national convention on the
primary ballot and let the voters of West Virginia decide who their delegates will be.  This process is going to be the focus of this blog, as it can be somewhat confusing. 



Although we are selecting delegates to the Republican national
convention, independents (no party choice) can choose to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries. You have to ask for the ballot you want, however.  The poll worker is not allowed to ask you which one you want.  You just have to tell them.  Therefore, independents can have an effect on who the Republican convention delegates are from West Virginia if they vote in the Republican primary.    


The first point of confusion is what those little names in parentheses mean.  If you look at a sample Republican primary ballot, you will see that there are a lot of people running for convention delegate and that each of them either has the name of a presidential candidate after their name (Paul, Romney, etc.) or the word “uncommitted.”  This tells you what this person will do at the convention if they are elected. 



Those delegate candidates with a candidate name in parenthesis  after their name, known as “committed delegates,” have committed to vote for that candidate at the convention on the first ballot.  In recent history, there has not been more than one ballot at the convention, so by voting for a committed delegate you are essentially casting a vote for the candidate they support. 



The other “uncommitted” delegate candidates have not made any
promises up front as to who they will vote for at the convention. 
If you vote for an uncommitted delegate, you are essentially saying that
you trust that person’s judgment and you want them to go down to the convention and vote for whoever they think is the best potential nominee at the time. 


The second point of confusion is that there are actually four separate races for Republican National Convention delegate on the
ballot this year.  The first is the “at large”race where people are running statewide. So any one voting in the Republican primary anywhere in West Virginia will have the chance to vote for these same candidates. 
You can vote for up to 19 of these candidates, although you are not
required to vote for 19.  You can vote for fewer which can give your vote more power.  


Local conservatives John Hartsoch, my wife Laura and myself are all
running to become at large delegates.  Other tea party groups from around the state are also supporting the following candidates:  Thorney
Lieberman, Edward Burgess, Patrick Morrisey (also a candidate for attorney general), Patricia Rucker, Lucas Bolyard, Charles Peck, Donna Holstine, Sandy Staats, David Huffman, and Joel Davis III.


The other three races are in West Virginia’s three congressional
districts.  In each district, people will be running as delegates to the convention from that district only.  You can vote for up to 3 of these candidates running in your district, although, again, you can vote for fewer.  Local conservatives Diana Bartley (who is also a tea party endorsed WV House of Delegates candidate), Stephen McElroy, and Russ Snyder are running to become delegates from the First Congressional District.  Andrew Sabak, who is a member of the Marion County Tea Party, is also running. 


I hope that this explanation has helped to clear up some confusion and misconceptions about the process. Many states have not yet selected their convention delegates which means that the selection of good delegates from West Virginia is still very important.  So let’s go out there and send some conservatives to the convention!

Message to Primary Voters from Co-Founder of North Central WV Tea Party

Greetings Patriots,

Early voting for the primary has begun here in West Virginia. This is when we can really take a stand that matters. It is important that freedom minded people of all parties make their voice heard in every election. Here are few things I would like for you to keep in mind as you vote in the primary.

Independent Voters


Anyone who is registered as an independent
(no party choice) can vote in either the Republican primary or the Democratic primary. Tell the poll clerk which ballot you would like, as they are not supposed to ask.  If you don't tell them, they will hand you the non-partisan ballot which doesn't the primary candidates from either party on it. 


Tea Party Candidates

Our local Tea
Party as a group vetted candidates and decided to support two. These candidates are Diana Bartley, Republican for House of Delegates, and Joe Galan, Democrat for Harrison County Assessor.

There other good conservatives on the ballot and many spots to fill. If you have not decided for whom to vote, I urge you to do some research and decide for yourself who the best candidates are. Do your research quickly because the last chance to vote will be on May 8.


Delegates to the National Convention


As many of you may know, the votes that really choose the parties' nominees for president are the votes cast by the delegates to the national convention.

State parties make the decision as to how the delegates are selected. In West Virginia, the Republican Party puts those wanting to be a delegate on the ballot. Not only is the nominee chosen at the convention, but the party platform is also formed. Let's get conservatives to the convention. One way to take this nation back is to get conservatives in positions where they can make a difference in the parties. Please take the time to look at the list of candidates for delegate to the national convention. 

There are actually two separate races for delegate to the Republican National Convention.  One race is for the "at large" delegates and you can vote for up to 19 candidates in that race.  The other race is for Congressional district delegates.  You can vote for up to 3 of these candidates.  

Whether you vote early or on election day, in the Republican primary or in the Democratic primary, whoever you support, go out and make your voice heard. Together we will take our nation
back.

Politicians are Accountable to the People

I met a couple from California yesterday. The husband said, “Our state is broke and I just want to know where our tax dollars are going.” It seemed to be difficult for him say that his state is broke. He said that their taxes have been raised and teachers have been losing their jobs. He wants know why his state government is making the choices they are making with his money. I met another man from California who told me that Californians are not as the rest of the country pictures. He said that their state government does not reflect the values of the citizens.

In the rest of the country, we feel the same way. We see taxes go up, and sometimes taxes go up and we do not realize it because the way politicians raise the taxes. We see that our country is in debt. We see that other countries are losing faith in the dollar. We wonder where are our tax dollars are going. We have seen the bailouts, and we wonder, “Why is our government making these choices with our money?” We look at our politicians and know that their decisions do not reflect our values of freedom and responsibility.

Our country was founded to be a country in which the values of the people were reflected by the government. It is a country in which the people hold the politicians accountable. On July 4, we will stand up and say, “Enough already.” We want our politicians to know where we stand and that we going to hold them accountable. If they do not listen to the people, they will find out what it is like to be unemployed.

Stop the Bailouts

Chrysler is filing for bankruptcy and what is our government doing, giving handing them another $8 billion of our money.  It is not the governments job to bailout these companies. It is not the taxpayers job to bailout these companies. I did not choose to give the government my money to bailout failing businesses. I will not let them do it anymore. I will not vote for elected representatives who support bailouts. The real revolution happens at the ballot box.  Start finding out how your elected representatives vote and look for candidates who support what you believe in.  Together we will take our nation back and we will secure the future of our nation for our children and grandchildren.

Thank You for Speaking Out

I am excited about what happened on Wednesday. The people came out to let Washington know that we have had enough runaway spending. It takes courage to stand up for what you believe, but the American people are a courageous people. A friend of mine tried to get a count, but stopped counting when she got to 300. We approximated the turnout to be around 350. That is a great turnout of courageous people for a cold rainy day.

I would like to commend our local media for reporting on the Tea Party. I know some of the national media missed the point of the Tea Parties. They thought it was all about taxes. That is part of it. Maybe there are going to be tax cuts for many Americans, but then from where is the money going to come. Tax increases are coming. A nation cannot spend trillions of dollars without raising taxes to pay the bill. Are we going to pretend we can afford the bill and create the illusion we have the money by printing more? Wait we have already done that. Are going to borrow from other nations raising national debt to massive levels? Oh, we've done that, too. That is why people came out on Wednesday. These are people who care about their children and grandchildren. They do not want to leave an inheritance of debt. These were democrats, republicans, and independents that recognize politicians on both sides have spent our money and the money of future generations. These are people who want their voices to be heard.

What do we do now? We continue to speak. We inform our neighbors; they be not see the same news we do. We write our elected representatives know how we feel and if they do not listen we vote for people to replace them. We write to the news media and tell them what really happened on tax day. If we continue to speak out, someone will listen.
